Project: Epistemic and Evidential Strategies as Register Features in Hittite State Correspondence

Christian Bruns is a linguist with an M.A. in historical-comparative linguistics from the Philipps-University Marburg. He has worked on the pre-modal auxiliaries of the Hittite language in his thesis and, as part of a research stay at the University of Bologna in the WoPoss project, he studied lexical expressions of modality in Latin. His research focuses on the pragmatics and syntax of old Indo-European languages, especially expressions of modality in the Anatolian languages. In addition, he seeks to explore the possibilities of applying modern concepts to old languages.
During his stay with the CRC (Area B07), he investigates the variation of epistemic expressions in Hittite state correspondence as a potential marker of register. Afterwards, he will utilise his findings from his thesis and the CRC for a comprehensive study of modal strategies in Hittite as part of his PhD in the academy project „The Corpus of the Hittite Festival Rituals“ at the Philipps-University Marburg.
