C03
Real-time register comprehension in adolescent heritage speakers’ languages

C03 continues to investigate the real-time processing of register (mis)matches and semantic verb-argument / grammatical morphosyntactic (in)congruence by means of eye-tracking studies. A central project goal is to integrate C03’s observed findings of Phase I and Phase II into an extant language processing model. Additionally, we take into account comprehender background factors – such as age, Russian heritage language and proficiency – both in our experiments and by implementing them in the model.

Project in Phase I

Project Title for Phase I

Situation-register congruence meets morphosyntax and verb-argument violations: Real-time and post-sentence comprehension

Project Description for Phase I

C03 assesses the (representational and procedural) similarities and differences in comprehenders’ processing of standard-language grammar compared with register. It asks whether one can parsimoniously assume a single mechanism and closely-linked mental representations or whether one must model standard-language and register processing via distinct mental representations and/or mechanisms. Using eye-tracking and EEG, the project investigates whether comprehenders draw on a single conceptual store (usage-based) for a word’s standard and colloquial versions (e.g. “Schuhe” and “Latschen” respectively) or whether these are represented in distinct lexical assemblies and/or processed via distinct mechanisms.
