Qiang Xia
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
Institut für deutsche Sprache und Linguistik
Qiang Xia received her undergraduate degree at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in German studies and sociology. In her bachelor thesis, she tried to understand the acquisition of German syllable structures by native Cantonese speakers. During her master study there, she developed an interest in typology by working as a student assistant at ZAS on the QUEST and DoReCo projects. She is also fascinated by sociophonetics. In her master thesis, she compared the turn-taking behaviours in face-to-face and Zoom situations with respect to temporal aspects. At the same time, she is a member of a seminar work group focusing on vowel quality and vowel convergence in face-to-face and Zoom situations. Her research interests also include fictional language perception and phone-aesthetics.
As an MGK fellow, Qiang will be associated with CRC1412 project C06: “Non-native addressee register” and investigate the phonetic level of the specific register. Intra-speaker variations between talking to native speakers and talking to non-native speakers will be compared from the following perspectives: vowel quality, speech rate, intensity and variation in fundamental frequency.
